We all have two lives. the life we live and the unlived life within us. Between the two is resistance.
Typically our resistance isn’t physical, its in many other forms:
Delays/distractions/lack of interest from people/indifference/finances/
1 of 2 things happens when a leader encounters resistance. Either Lamb-like or Lion-like. - if they go to lamb-like leadership, then they give up their power to the resistance.
What Lamb-like leadership looks like:
1. It’s meandering & wondering.
- When you get the sense that the leader doesn’t know what to do or where to go.
- People want to know where we are leading and where are we going?
- People respond differently when we lead confidently and specifically. Thats lion-like leadership.
2. The Leader believes they are a victim of circumstances.
- Instead of facing and changing the resistance, we tell everyone why we cant.
- Negative Elements of truth that come your way, are not what you want to build a platform on. Example: people in the northwest don’t go to church, so we cant grow a church here.
3. A “do it myself ” mindset takes over rather than a building teams and leading teams mindset.
- they lead from weakness. and people only follow out of pity.
- The truth is, you do more when you include others.
Building team process::: I do it first / I do it you watch / you do it & watch & correct / you do it.
What Lion-like leadership looks like:
1. Owns the need.
- This is a problem I can do something about.
- I can do this, and I WILL do this, and make this happen!
- I’m gonna be a leader that people can follow.
> chic-fil-a - Focus on getting better and our customers will demand that we get bigger.
- No one can make anything grow, God makes it grow, we focus on making things better, and then God will make it grow.
- If we make it better, the people will come.
Lion-like leaders own the need to get better!
2. Owns the strategy and the skill for on-going improvement.
- Leaders not only recognize the need but also own and recognize the strategy to move forward.
- Include other competent people to develop your winning strategy. Too many miss-fires and it will diminish confidence from your followers.
- Leaders need to own the skill development for on-going improvement.
Ecclesiastes 10:10 If the ax is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed but skill will bring success.
3. Owns the outcome.
- If things aren’t going well than we need to own that.
- Even if its not “Our Department” in a healthy culture we own and care for the whole church.
- So we We..
- pray
- encourage
- have a sense of ownership
- Assessment & Evaluation - From Pk’s book on Church Culture
Ask yourself… was the outcome…
- Affirming
- understandable
- directional
- digestible
- relataeable
- compatible
- inspirational
